President Lungu taking oath of office

The Patriotic Front (PF) have strategically launched a campaign to extend President Edgar Lungu’s tenure in office.

The ruling party, which rose to power in 2011 under its founding leader Michael Sata, seemly want to maintain grip on power even if it means changing the law to make that possible.

The PF have more elected MPs and can always win any motion brought on the table.

Despite Zambia changing it constitution recently, one Member of the PF Central Committee by the name of Paul Moonga has proposed the extension of the tenure of office for elected officials from the current five to seven years.

Moonga told a media briefing held at the PF Secretariat on Thursday that the five-year tenure is insufficient for a President to implement most of his policies.

He adds that holding elections every five years has a negative impact on the economy.

Moonga who said he was speaking in his individual capacity explained that the danger of the current 5-year term is that Members of Parliament fail to perform because of the prospect of holding another election.

He says his proposal is for the benefit of the nation and not President Edgar Lungu or the Patriotic Front.

Meanwhile  Moonga says UPND President Hakainde Hichilema should swallow his pride and accept that he lost the presidential election instead of causing unnecessary tension in the country.

He says it is wishful thinking for Hichilema to claim that he won the elections when he only won in his strongholds.

Moonga adds that  Hichilema has failed to run the party and that it is time senior UPND leaders retired him.

  1. Thank you Zambian Eye for continuing to expose the painful truths of African politics. You are filling in the gap left by ZWD.

It is painful to read such utterances. Add the hot sun, high prices and high levels of incompetence in our public offices.
    It just chokes you.

For a few privileged individuals close to the President, Zambia remains a paradise.

Leave HH alone. Just enjoy your paradise.

    God help us.

  2. If true, its unfortunate but will be resisted. A good lesson for those advocating this is to learn from the debacle of the third term attempt.

  4. We have history to take into account. We did not come up with 5 years just from without. We were coming from a wamuyaya syndrome. Which we collectively felt as a nation was very very wrong. Those were dark says when a leader went forever and was like a god on earth. We won’t go down that path. Let those who think they control the legislative arm not be tempted to bring up such retrogressive change of laws. It will be strongly resisted.

  5. Moonga is a fool and an idiot. Why does Zambia have such human beings? If Lungu with a 2 billion usd of borrowing could damage the economy in 1.5 years. What will he do in 7 years? Apart from increasing violence, corruption and everything that has damaged the country and its image

    • Yes Moonga is a stupid idiot. Australia has a 3 year term for both their Federal and State elections and their ministers perform well. Yet these monkeys want more years to steal more and cause more violence and deaths. This time around some PF cadres will rise up against them.

  6. WHAT KIND OF POLITICIANS DOES AFRICA HAVE? JOKERS RIGHT? HOW ON EARTH DOES SOMEBODY PROPOSE SUCH STONE AGE KIND OF TERM OF OFFICE? IF YOU CAN’T PERFORM, NOT EVEN 50, 100,1000 YEARS WOULD BE ADEQUATE FOR YOU. THE REASON ELECTIONS ARE HELD IS SO THAT CITIZENS ARE ACCORDED AN OPPORTUNITY TO EJECT OR RETAIN A GOVERNMENT BASED ON IT’S PERFORMANCE, SO HOW THEN DOES SOMEBODY PROPOSE THAT THE WAITING BE EXTENDED FOR A FURTHER TWO YEARS? COUNTRIES LIKE FRANCE THAT HAVE SUCH TERMS HAVE PROPER SYSTEMS IN PLACE BASUNGU ABA. IN AFRICA THIS IS A PROBLEM IN SOME COUNTRY WITH A SEVEN YEARS ARRANGEMENT, WHY UKUYITEMWA. USA AND SOUTH AFRICA HAVE FOUR YEARS ARRANGEMENTS, WHY DO U WANT MORE HERE IF NOT FOR PERSONAL BENEFITS. IT’S A PITY THAT A FEW DISAPPOINTING TONGAS ARE BEING USED IN MANY WRONG THINGS SO THAT SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE CAN BE MADE TO BELIEVE HH IS NOT WANTED IN THAT POSITION. WHY SPEND SO MUCH TIME WORRYING ABOUT WHO SHOULD AND SHOULD NOT LEAD UPND. ISN’T THAT A UPND MATTER TO WORRY ABOUT? WHICH NORMAL TEAM WOULD ADVISE IT’S OPPONENTS ON WHICH TEAM TO SELECT IF IT HAS TO COME OUT OF A GAME VICTORIOUS? SO IF HH IS NOT THE RIGHT MAN TO LEAD UPND THEN THAT IS TGE ADVANTAGE YOU HAVE, TO KEEP TALKING ABOUT CHOOSING ANOTHER LEADER TO TAKE OVER FROM HH IS A CLEAR SIGN HH GIVES YOU PEOPLE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS.
BY THE WAY THIS SEVEN YEARS NONSENSE TO ME SEEMS TO HAVE COME UP BECAUSE SOMEBODY READ MULONGOTI’S ARGUMENT AND THEREFORE THE ONLY WAY TO LEGALIZE AN ILLEGALITY IS TO GO THE MONGA WAY.

  7. Edgar, I love you, but if you allow this debate to continue, I can assure you that you will leave office before the end of the current five years term. Behave like Mwanawasa who came out openly and strongly against those that had started to agitate for his third term. To date, LPM remains the best president that Zambia has had. For you ECL to win support of the world, you should stop this today and now.

  8. Moonga don’t speak on behalf of dictators. Why should you start thinking of manipulating the constitution when you gave the people according to PF the so called people driven constitution. What is bad now about it barely less than ten months when you endorsed it at heroes stadium after spending a lot of tax payers money in allowances to PF cadres who attended to that sham arrangement. That’s not democracy and to hell with your devilish ideas. You do it at your own peril because it means now your Chagwa will even go before the five years.

  12. 7 years??? In Africa, most countries that run a 7 year Presidential term are former French Colonies. Even then, lately, I have heard of one or two if not several of them wanting to cut this 7 year term to 5 years! Moonga, you are a disgrace. We strongly opposed and rubbished that idea when you you brought it up in several UPND meetings. It is highly retrogressive and nonsensical!

  13. I heard this Moonga making that statement. However, if he was expressing a personal point of view, I would say the timing is wrong and he is putting the President’s name in public ridicule. The new constitution took so long to come to its current amendment. Such proposals should have come at the time the draft was being done. At this point in time, I am not surprised that people are pointing fingers at the President as the one trying to manipulate the Constitution. Now you can see the insults people are showering, not at you, Mr. Moonga, but at the President.

  14. Zambia is a funny and illegal state. This is why we promote illegalities and useless ideas that take the country nowhere. As a result, the very useless and incompetent people are the one holding high offices in the Government. We are all aware that ECL is the most useless and incompetent president that ever ruled this country. It is therefore that some people can propose an extension of the term of president during his rule. Such people should as a matter of fact be charged with treason. Those who see that that this Zambia is fake and taking us nowhere are instead the ones charged with treason. Bwana Moonga we know you are not liked in PF because of where you originate from and suggesting such bizarre things will not make the fascists in PF love you. Grow up and do right things so that when you are no more at least you leave a good legacy. Learn from what is happening to Fr. Bwalya.

  15. As a matter of fact, there are countries in our neighbourhood that have had presidents for more than 30 years. Congo Brazzaville, Uganda and Zimbabwe are immediate examples. Can someone tell me that Congo Brazzaville, Uganda and Zimbabwe have achieved levels of development that are uniquely attributed to the long years of the respective presidents in office? If anything, their long stay is probably the reason for certain malaise in those countries. The bottom line is one can achieve measurable and positive outcomes in five years or less, as long as one is properly focused.

  17. Those are the consequences of putting an imbecile in a public office.
John Magufuli is ECL’s counterpart, how long did it take him to break the record he made? I expected a sound person to propose a tenure of 2-3yrs if that passed yo mind hmmm…
the citizens of Zambia entrusted pf with a yr+ & in some ways five yrs (a period more than wat Magufuli needed to become the best president in da world) to prove yo credibility & moonga laments that this is still not enough for him to deliver. were u really elected by the species of yo constituency or maybe u were sleeping & suddenly just found yoself in parliament.
if u hv nothing to present in parliament for yo pipo sir just resign n tell yo pipo that u are overwhelmed by the crown n can’t stand it.
Wat u uttered is total sabotage out of rubbish in the middle of the storm. TO HELL WITH YOU.

  18. The proposal to extend the presidents tenure to 7 years will only happen if Zambians themselves continue to sit back and allow dictatorship to replace democracy.

The people of Zambia have the power to make positive changes. Zambians must put a STOP and Shut down the 7 year proposal before it gets enacted into law.

What do you expect when your ECL has Mugabe & Museveni as his closet allies – stay in power.
Mugabe being the chief guest at innuagration & Museveni being the chief guest at independence.

The Bembas & their Eastern cousins, because of their corrupt minds, are the source of all these mayhem.
Moonga is a fool who has been paid – very treacherous chap.

You elected ECL & PF – so, enjoy your fruits.

Thank you very much Hon Moonga. If we had more people in the south who wisely think like you,Zambia whould have been more developed than today.Five year term is a sham that needs to be changed to 8 year term to foster development by cutting on the electorol budget .This is the opportune time to amend this policy issue.I thought for once that this time our UPND counterparts whould support this bright idea alas NO.McDonald and his fellow slow thinkers are exposing their hate and selfishness and tribalism.PF has the numbers in the house. We ll go it our own way hey like or not.I they boycot the sitting, slash their allowances.SHYAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
