Rupiah Banda handing over instruments of power to Micheal Sata

By Masinga Khumalo

These were the promises used by the PF to unseat Rupiah Banda’s MMD government on September 23, 2011.

Those of us who were privileged enough to attend PF rallies in the run-up to the 2011 general elections still vividly remember the late Sata reading out these promises to cheering audiences and the excitement caused by such promises. No doubt the Zambian people were excited at the prospect of living better lives.

4 years down the line, after HE Micheal Sata passed on, came in Edgar Lungu as successor. Edgar Lungu promised to carry on with Sata’s vision as he didn’t have his own.

An honest assessment of the performance of the PF going by their promises reveals massive failure. Basically they have done the opposite of what they promised the people of Zambia.

The PF government has seen it fit to call piece works which they created through road projects as jobs which they have also seen fit to include in their statistics of job employment. We are still waiting to see the 500,000 jobs Edgar Lungu promised to create in 2015.

Mealie meal prices were around K36 to K40 in the time of Rupiah Banda, but now the same quantity of Mealie Meal is costing between K100 to K150, even when government has announced that we have more than enough stocks of Maize, around 668,000 MT to last up to August this year. We do not import maize, so the ‘global effect’ which has famously been used as an excuse by the PF would not apply on this commodity.

Fuel prices ranged between K5 and K7 kwacha but now even with reduced prices of crude oil on the international market, fuel prices are ranging from K8.59 to K11.

And the cost of living during Rupiah Banda’s time was better than what we see in the PF administration today. Zambia maintained single digit inflation under the MMD with RB leaving inflation at around 6% but now under the PF, inflation has skyrocketed to more than 22%.

The score is the same with the PF promise of lowering taxes and giving people more money in the pockets, and that is a score of Zero.

So when some of us criticise the PF we do it with an honest assessment of their performance against their promises, not motivated by hate towards certain individuals, like the case is with most PF cadres who criticise HH and the UPND.

Edgar Lungu and his PF have failed!

  4. This quiet surprising because they are planning to introduce an S.I which will allow the government to control the prices . That S.I cant work in a country like Zambia where we have a type of market economy . In market economy the production, pricing and distribution is not controlled by the government but they private sector. The role of the government is just to look at fiscal controls. If the government want to control the price then expect less foreign direct investment. Market economy allows a room for competition in business.

  6. Don’t point a finger at the president, remember that 3 fingers are also pointing at you.In short before you blame the Government, ask your self what you have done or what you are doing to uplift your living standard ? You can change the Government but Government WON’T change you. Just work harder for you to live the life you want. Don’t be cheated like babies by the opposition.

  7. Multitudes do not necessarily translate into votes. People are reading between lines who of the politicians is making better sense. Tread carefully
