A 45-year-old man has been severely beaten and his vehicle burnt to ashes by irate villagers after he hit and injured a pedestrian along the Kapiri Mposhi-Ndola road.

Central Province Commissioner of Police Standwell Lungu confirmed the incident to ZANIS which happened yesterday around 19:00 hours at Fibawe area in Kapiri Mposhi district.

Mr Lungu said the driver of a Toyota Noah motor vehicle registration number AAH 3649 identified as Juda Mwando travelling to Ndola was cornered by irate villagers after he stopped to help his victim whom he had hit.

“He was ambushed and beaten severely and had his vehicle burnt to ashes by a mob of angry villagers when he stopped to help the victim whom he had hit,” Mr Lungu said.

Both the driver and the accident victim who sustained head injuries have been admitted to Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital where they are nursing serious injuries.

Mr Lungu said police have since launched a man hunt to arrest the villagers who will be charged with arson.

Meanwhile, Mr Lungu has urged people not to take the law in their own hands and has advised them to always follow the right procedure whenever they are aggrieved.

“We don’t encourage mob justice… people should always follow the right way of handling such cases as of now we have launched investigations and a manhunt to arrest villagers who participated in the beating up of the driver and arson,” Mr Lungu said.

And a 14-year-old girl died on the spot after being hit by a vehicle along the Ndola -Kapiri Mposhi highway.

The girl identified as Rona Mwaba of Kasapato village in Kapiri Mposhi was hit by a vehicle Toyota Carina registration number ACP 9861 around 19:00 hours last night.

The fire suspected to have been triggered by an electric fault was however quenched by the Kapiri Mposhi Council Fire Brigade before it spread to other nearby shops.

  2. It’s really saddening to see people taking the law into their own hands. Mostly such people have no clear idea of what really transpired, but just want to beat up drivers. This does not only affect the driver but also the injured person who needs to be rushed to hospital. Most drivers now would rather rush to the nearest Police station instead of the hospital.
