President Lungu

President Edgar Lungu has re-affirmed that he will not intervene in the treason charge of opposition United Party for National Development president Hakainde Hichilema.

The Head of State was speaking to journalists before departure for Northern Province on a three day working visit.
President Lungu said that Hichilema’s treason case will be dealt with according to the law.

He said the people that arrested Hichilema will be left to do their jobs without his interference.

Hichilema has been charged with treason and six other offences following the incident in Mongu on Saturday where he refused to give way to the Presidential motorcade.

On Monday night police raided Hichilema’s house and arrested him around 11:00 hours on Tuesday and have been holding him at Lilayi Police Training College.

On Wednesday Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja confirmed that Hichilema had been charged with treason and also failure to obey lawful orders among other charges.
“Let’s allow each other space to do that which we have been assigned in our calling. As the President, I know my job and these people also as law enforcement authority they know their job, even lawyers know their job,” said President Lungu.
“People calling upon me to intervene in the operations of the police, we don’t do that in a civilised state. The rule of law demands that the law is above all of us so those who are calling upon me to intervene or interfere in areas which are not under my control, I will not do so. Let us respect each other’s roles.”

He added: “There’s the Legislature, the Executive, the Judiciary, President, Police Inspector General, all of us have got roles. Why do they want me to have all the power which I don’t have? I don’t have power.”

Hichilema has since applied for a writ habeas corpus seeking that the law enforcement officers bring her before the courts of law.
His writ of habeas corpus hearing has been adjourned to next Tuesday leaving him to spend the Easter weekend behind bars.

The maximum punishment for treason is the death sentence.

  4. What law? There’s no law in Zambia. Lungu himself is a failed lawyer so what does he know about the law? Except that fact that all judges now seem to work under his instructions when it comes to handling cases of UPND members and supporters. Remember how his thug Kaizer Zulu behaved at the end of CAF? Was the thug ever charged? NO is the answer. That’s because the police are also thugs themselves. Hence no law in Zambia. I can’t emphasize enough when I say Lungu will get his comeuppance. It’s a real shame that none of the former presidents of Zambia still alive can talk some sense into his alcoholic brain. Not sure about RB because he’s probably encouraging such nonsense.

  6. Lungu talks about Rule of Law and separation of power among the Executive Arm of govt, Parliament and the Judiciary when it suits him. Lungu is a hypocrite and whatever he says u must know the opposite is true.To raid HH’s Family Home at Mid Nite without a Search Warrant, loot it,teargas the occupants, steal money, food and property etc is this Rule of Law? Is this Respect for Human Rights and Good Governance? To arrest HH,charge him for Treason for allegedly obstructing the Presidential Motorcade. Is this legal and constitutional? During the Petition Hearing Lungu refused to handover power to the Speaker of Parliament as required by the Constitution.Lungu was not declared the Winner of the 2016 Election as required by the Constitution but proceeded to illegally inaugurate himself in power. Lungu has abrogated the Zambian Constitution so many times and yet he is now pretending to respect Constitutionalism.Lungu has refused the Zambian Courts to hear the Petitioners and has embarked on a Strategy to kill the Petition by arresting and imprisoning the Petitioners to force them to recognize him and withdraw the Petition from ICJ.Lungu’s strategy will fail and he will soon pay the Price for misgoverning Zambia. The ICC jail doors are now open for Lungu and his fellow criminals for committing crimes against humanity. Lungu has started a war with the people of Zambia which he cannot win.Lungu’s Rule will end tragically.Time will judge him.

  7. So the 20 lawyers UPND has hired via fat Albert are corrupted by hh & gbm because no body is straight these days according to you chaps. Why getting so many heads just over one chap who has no respect to authority?? Too many cooks spoil the gravy. Put the money into development other than on a straightforward case committed by a novice politician.
