HH is being kept in a cruel and unfit condition for human habitation – Kakoma

UPND Spokesperson Charles Kakoma has revealed that the condition under which Hakainde Hichilema is being kept at Mukobeko Maximum Security prison are cruel and unfit for a human being to live.

Kakoma who visited Hichilema or HH as he is commonly called described his visit as a traumatic experience.

Below is his report:

I visited President Hakainde Hichilema in Mukobeko Maximum Prison in Kabwe. . It was a traumatic experience. Before I stepped foot in Mukobeko, I was doubting some of the horrifying stories circulating on social media about the inhuman and degrading treatment Hakainde Hichilema was going through. From what I saw and heard, I can now inform you that the conditions under which Hakainde Hichilema is being kept are cruel and unfit for human habitation. This is not even a new finding. Many Parliamentary and human rights investigations have concluded the same and recommended for reforms.

On the day when government decided to use maximum force to transfer him from Lusaka Central Prison to Mukobeko, they made him spend a night in an overcrowded cell of about 179 people. Some of these people had chronic chest infections as they were coughing throughout the night. Common chest infections of this nature include tuberculosis. Why was it found necessary to expose Hakainde Hichilema to this risk?

The following day, Hakainde Hichilema (fondly known as HH) was transferred to a tiny cell measuring about 2 metres by 2.5 metres. There is no toilet in the room but the authorities have provided a bucket to be used as a toilet. The bucket can only be emptied in a colonial type toilet (without a sitting pan like a pitlatrine) outside the cell. During the night, at around 20.00 hours, the authorities switch off power to HH’s cell. There is no switch inside the cell. He stays in the dark the whole night. The motive is not known. Can you imagine a situation where the accused person develops diarrhoea and can’t find the bucket because of darkness?
There is no water in the cell. No sink, no bathtab, no shower. The accused person is expected to go outside his cell and draw water from a common tap and bath in full view of other inmates. This is degrading and dehumanizing.
There is no mattress provided by the authorities. However, HH managed to get hold of his private mattress he was using at Lusaka Central Prison. His cellmate is sleeping on the cold floor.

When I entered the section where HH is being detained, I was looking forward to shaking his hand. It never happened!!!. Not because HH did not want to greet me but that the reception area, which looked ancient and designed by colonial rulers to punish freedom fighters, has a physical barrier which prevents contact between the visitor and the accused. It reminded me of the colour bar during the colonial days when Africans could only buy meat from a butchery through a window to prevent the African from having contact with the white members of staff and the meat. The physical barrier basically consists of glass and wiremesh. At this reception, Most people “shake hands” by placing their palms on either side of the glass and wiremesh without any warmth of physical contact. I felt dehumanized. In Lusaka Central Prison, visitors and accused persons could great each other by shaking hands and symbolised human dignity. My revolutionary solution is to do away with these degrading practices. There is no privacy by the way. Prison warders stand next to you to hear your conversation with the accused persons.

After saying all this, your question is: how is HH?
He was the first one to ask me the same question. I replied in the affirmative even if I was not fine. I’m sick because of his incarceration. The word affirmative loosely means ” positive, yes, ok, etc” I asked him the same question and he equally replied in the affirmative but I did not believe him. It is like asking a person involved in an accident whether he is fine or not. Oftentimes, they would say they are fine when infact not. Put yourself in HH’s position. In what condition would you be without bathing for one week, It would take doctors to determine the bill of health. Who knows HH’S current state of health?. I don’t know. I don’t want biased government doctors to do that. HH’S personal doctors should examine him.

1. Hitherto, family members, lawyers and human rights organisations have been denied access to the cell and environment where HH is being detained. As UPND, we demand that family members, lawyers, the media and human rights organisations be given the opportunity to tour the section where HH is being detained.

2. We also demand that HH should be taken back to Lusaka Central Prison as per directive of the magistrate court. It’s a terrible break down in the rule of law for central government to ignore a court order.

3 HH’S personal doctors should examine him regularly .
visitation rights as ruled by the Lusaka magistrates court should be adhered to.
4. Finally, and the most important, HH must be released unconditionally and the election petition should be heard to bring peace, unity and political stability to Zambia.

    • @Keen follower, Problem is you treat hakainde like a ka small god, that is why he has become so big headed, and wants to break the law at will. If big people like KK went to Mukobeko, what is so special about Ka Hichilema.I wonder what type of government UPND can run if they don’t believe in the laws of the land.

    • What about daily insulting and belittling a sitting President, is that not a sin? What does God say about leadership? You insult lungu you insult the one who allowed it. Be fair and look on both sides of the coin.

UPND mentality is shallow and one track minded!

  6. Why are people talking about HH being housed in bad condition. HH sure who went in yesterday? What about our brothers and sisters who have been there years. Why did we not talk about these conditions? Is HH the only human there? Let the government improve the conditions for the whole prison not only where HH is being kept. If HH is to be transferred because of those conditions, then lets advocate that all prisoners and remandees there be transferred also. That will be fair. Mr. Kakoma please talk for all of them though you have talked because of HH is reach. You believe those conditions are for the poor. Very sad perception sir.

  8. why persecuting an innocent soul all because of election pertition? PF what are you affraid off? remember there is time for everything.let the people love you because of you goodworks, not by dictatorship.

    June 14, 2017 at 9:20 pm

    • This is not persecution of HH actually it is HH persecuting Lungu for winning an election. How can you hope to win an election from 3 provinces only out of 9? Why dont you leak the matrix of how you were robbed and where you were robbed.

Who has challenged UPNDs 100% vote in Dudumwenzi? We the remaining 6 provinces are now wiser than we were and will revenge accordingly come 2021! Problem is UPND cant see further than its nose. You have lost your gains by your barbaric conduct of violence and refusal to accept defeat. It therefore goes without saying that once in government you wont want to get out. You also wont accept defeat! What a web UPND has weaved for itself.

  9. I support Dikky KP’s comment only, the rest are equally bias. Thumbs up to Dikky KP. If we all spoke like that even the dilapedated cells we are talking about now, were not going to be there. These cells are there up today’s because we do not know how to approach matters.

  10. What Lungu is doing to HH is a crime against humanity. Lungu should be tried in the Hague for violation of human rights. Lungu is a devil.

  11. Brothers & Sisters l honestly sympathise with ba HH. One thing we must realise is that Zambian has more people than HH. I know he is even better of than others who have been there for years and have no one to speak on their behalf but God. Let’s just learn to love one another and cherish peace. Leadership is given by God and it’s how wealthy one is. God is capable of raising anyone and anytime. Let’s just pray for all people incacerated that the merciful God can grant them favour. Prison no matter lavish, it is never the best place for any human being rich or poor. I love you all from the corners of Zambia.

  12. I don’t like it when certain people bring their foolishness into public domain! If u are not a Zambian, I still believe u are at least human!! All those that are saying HH is being treated like a god by UPND followers and that he is not any supper human being than those that are in Mukobeko maximum security prison are exhibiting pure Pf mentality and barbaric behaviour!. HH of course can not be subjected to that kind of environment not because he is rich or special or supper human being, but because HH isn’t a common criminal, like those armed robbers and murderers who are waiting to be hanged! Just because Dr Kaunda was put in that dehumanizing environment doesn’t make it a suitable place for someone who is fighting for the common good of everyone in this country including u same idiots who are cebrating high poverty levels perpetrated by this dictatorial Pf regime that has plunged this country into another inescapable debt trap of over $ 17 billion dollars in less than 6 years for what? When people speak out about certain things that are going wrongwrong in our country it doesn’t mean that they don’t care about what others are going through, but that change is just inevitable everywhere even in ur heads u fools! What is bad for one human being must be considered to be bad for every other human being too! An injustice is an injustice irrespective of how or who does it! Do pls learn to close ur filthy mouth if u gat nothing sensible to talk about on a public fora of this magnitude! We know that the law of this country only revolves around ur tinny dictator and nowhere else and all of u blind followers are wallowing in ignorance of what is right or wrong anymore!!!! Shame on u!

  14. My 3 questions are : (1) where’s lungu getting all this power to humiliate HH in the manner we have all seen?
(2)Are such powers of the president enshrined in the constitution?
    (3) Now , if these powers of disregarding the courts of law are being flouted in this manner , who is calling the shots , is it the president ,the commissioner of prisons or inspector general of police ?
As a concerned citizen of this country , my heart bleeds with untold sorrow : I or we need answers to these unfolding and disturbing developments in Zambian !
