Former UPND Chilanga Constituency Member of Parliament Keith Mukata who has been convicted for murder writes:

To Anyone Interested

The news that Mrs Maria Langa Phiri eventually won the Chilanga election reached me today at 09hrs. I must confess, I was elated because as earlier indicated in the note I wrote, the people of Chilanga deserves a mature and sober person who will put their interest at heart.

However, today I want to tell the nation something that I purposely did not want to say prior to the by-election because I am still a member of my party UPND, as such, I didn’t want to knock the party down at a critical time.

As you may be aware, my relationship with the party began to detoriate the day I opted to stay put in parliament when President Edgar Lungu was addressing the nation. To many of my colleagues in UPND I was regarded as a villain. But to those who sort to understand why I decided to trade on national interest and NOT party interests propelled by some few people within my party , will admit that when they confronted me over the issue, I was candid enough to say the disease our party suffers from.

To cut the story short, I was open enough that the greatest enemy to the progress of UPND is the leadership. I started by talking about what I came to learn as the weakness of my President Hakainde Hichilema. For the sake of clarity, I repeatedly told those that confronted me that unless the party decides to stand up against the dictates of Hakainde Hichilema’s own wisdom, my party would not win a national election.

Without mentioning names here, I was open to one of the individuals who has played a very big role in the recent developments in UPND. I further said that what is the purpose of our being elected as MPs if we are in the habit of boycotting parliament at the instigation of our party president when we were elected to the National Assembly by the people in our constituencies. I stressed that many times we have been called upon as MPs to even defy the interests of the people in quest to please one or a few people in the party. Honestly, when I decided to stay put in parliament, I did not know I had this courage in my to stand for what my conscious feels comfortable with but after the whole thing I realized that I was myself and that despite belonging to a party and recognising it’s leaderships, our individual goals and aspirations matter too.

From that day I was hated by bootlickers of my president but I can say here today that a few of us began a silent movement to change the status quo in UPND. Together with those who agreed with me, we decided that if our exit in the party would bring change in the leadership, then so be it. We vowed to take HH and a few of his bootlickers neck to neck and champion a cause for democracy.

Sadly, I am not with the team working on this to see to it that what was inspired by my acts succeedes. However, I am not sure if that movement is still alive because I have never even seen those colleagues, whose names I withhold, even visit me at prison. What I hear is that those people have been threatened that they will be expelled and therefore have given in to the same bondage of a few people in the party.

I am bringing this out because obviously, the loss of my party in Chilanga is more premised on the dictatorial choices made. That decision to adopt Charmaine was not only to impose her on the people but was meant to get to me for standing up against bad leadership. But what kind of a leader is he, who wants to hurt someone as me who is already defeated by the circumstances I find myself in? What kind of leader is he who yearns to see my children suffer all because I decided to defy his order?

Anyways, my last words today are that Hakainde Hichilema and a few of his team need to change focus from their selfishness to the people’s interest. However, for now the party is unfortunately going nowhere.

Congratulations to the winner, I hope the people of Chilanga will benefit from your victory.

In conclusion, I thank the prison officers for facilitating this piece.

  2. Would Mr Mukata be given the same platform (opportunity to write letters) from prison if those letters were critical of the ruling party? Your guess is as good as mine! Next we shall hear that he has been given s presidential pardon; that’s how far we have sank as s nation. All the best former MP.

  4. Mr. Mukata has truly said it. That is why no much development is taking place in Southern Province because MPs are afraid of being expelled if they lobby for finance from Ministry of Finance. HH dictates that no one must approach any Government office lest he is a suspect, wants to join the progressive ruling Party PF! Just imagine the President went to Monze on Agric mission and the MP Jack was no where to be seen!! Yaaaabaaa!!
Dr. Hamikale is being given headache by this tribal party. Mark my words.

  7. Really!!! A convicted murderer can now be commenting on good leadership. Where in hell can a convicted murderer be give space to talk about national politics. Please have respect of the man you shot in cold blood and shut up. HH may be a bad leader but you are a murderer penning all these stupid letters hoping for a presidential pardon and indeed our stupid koswe will grant you one.

  9. Mukata is very likely to walk to freedom on appeal. DPP should have made Charmaine Musonda a state witness instead of charging her also. She is the only one who saw it all. Only her testimony would have built a solid case for the prosecution. DPP Siyunyi got it wrong on this one.
