HH waves at Supporters as he is driven to prison

Civil Society leader Pamela Chisanga has observed that opposition UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has been incarcerated for a long time and has advised his party to think through on how to secure his release.

Commenting on move by the Catholic Church Bishops to engage President Lungu and Hichilema who is facing treason charges for a dialogue, Ms Chisanga says she feels for the opposition leader.

President Lungu yesterday accepted to dialogue with Hichilema on condition that he recognise him as winner of the 2016 elections. He also allowed the Catholic Bishops to visit Hichilema in prison and deliver the message.

The UPND has not commented on the issue and has asked members to wait for the party’s position on the matter.

But Ms Chisanga has the following message for UPND leadership which she says is predicatable:

I feel for HH. He has been in there too long. I think UPND needs to do the right analysis on this one. There is nothing more dangerous in this world like a fool with a cause. EL’s cause is holding to power, having more power, having no dissent. He may be amenable to engagement now because he now perhaps thinks he can salvage the situation because he is under a lot of criticism and threats of donors pulling out, but he doesn’t regret what he has done, he would not stop it if he wanted and this may be a temporary reprieve.

On the other hand, UPND is predictable, they will just shut down any overtures at reconciliation and he knows this. He is cunning. He wants to show that he tried to reach out, but HH refused. He wanted justice and justice has been served. He has been tried, found guilty and convicted. I do agree that any reconciliation must not be contingent upon HH recognizing Lungu but I do think HH and UPND should not be philosophical or emotional about this engagement.

Let them not fool themselves that it is a sign of defeat by EL. Far from it. Edgar has demonstrated how ruthless he is. People who know him talk about how unforgiving he is. I doubt this is an olive branch he is offering-it may be poison ivy he is holding out. UPND needs strategists to help them think through this, they have now had a terrible record of misjudgment and bungling things up. This must not be a winner takes all kind of engagement.

  3. What exactly is Chisanga’s advice to HH and UPND? Lungu is not sincere in saying that he wants Dialogue with HH. The suggestion by Lungu is a poisoned chalice. Why do Catholic Bishops need Lungu’s permission to go and see HH at Mukobeko Prison and have a discussion? How can 14 Catholic Bishops go and squat in HH’s Cell and ask him to sign an Agreement conceding defeat in the 2016 Election? What is the connection between the imprisonment of HH on Trumped Up Treason and HH’s recognition of Lungu, the Vote Theif and Law Breaker? If Lungu is serious and sincere about Dialogue with HH then he must first release HH from Jail unconditionally and unharmed. Lungu must drop the Fake Treason Charges and start unconditional Dialogue with HH. The Root cause of Tension and Disharmony in Zambia is the Disputed and Petitioned 2016 Election. The only way out is to let an Independent and Impartial Court Hear the Petition. For Lungu Hearing the Petition is as good as pleading guilty of Electoral Fraud and Treason for abrogating the Zambian Constitution. Just like ECOWAS and AU solved the Election Dispute in Gambia SADC and AU must mediate the Zambian Election Dispute.

  4. The worst thing is that HH is in prison to satisfy the base appetites of those in power for uncivilised cruelty. Placing dog dung in his vehicle! Letting him use a soiled bucket for bathing! Charging him with all manner of ficticious crimes all over the country! Moving him from station to station at the whim of prison officials! Subjecting him to dangerous contacts with intelligence officers trained in Romania in the ’70s! May God bless HH!

  6. What People fail to realize is that Lungu is a hypocrite,a Dictator and Sadist. Lungu loves Power and enjoys to see HH and 5 co-accused suffer in pain when they are innocent. Lungu pretends to be a Christian and a Man of God but he is Not. If Lungu loved God he would not treat his fellow human beings the way he has done to HH,Mwaliteta and others now languishing in Jail. Lungu has declared a SOE to give himself more powers to suppress and persecute HH and others further. Lungu is not sincere and committed to Peace and Dialogue. He is using Dialogue to prolong his hold on Stolen Power. Nothing much will come out of this Dialogue initiated by the Bishops. How can Lungu thru the Catholic Bishops Dialogue with a Prisoner and a suspected Criminal?Lungu should first free HH from Jail unconditionally and unharmed then Dialogue can begin. No meaningful Dialogue can take place without discussing the Disputed and Petitioned 2016 Election Results. Lungu can stew in Illegitimacy and destroy the Zambian Economy if he so wishes but Zambians must resist Lungu’s Dictatorship at all costs.

  8. Pamela Chisanga’s analysis of the situation is correct but her advice to HH and UPND is unclear and contradictory. We all know that Lungu cannot be trusted and his Dialogue thru the Catholic Bishops is not genuine but a Poisoned chalice. Sadist and Dictator Lungu is Not committed to Dialogue with HH. If Lungu was genuine he would release HH from Jail unconditionally and unharmed first and thereafter Dialogue can begin without preconditions. The Root cause of the Crisis in Zambia is the Disputed and Petitioned 2016 Election. Had the Petition been heard and the Court given a declaration of the Winner and duly elected President there would not be this Tension in our Land.Without some form of settlement on the Election Petition there wont be any peace in Zambia. Lungu cannot talk of Reconciliation without resolving the Dispute and without forgiveness. Lungu can kill HH and disband UPND but the Problem will remain and Lungu will continue to be illegitimate with dire consequences on the Zambian Economy and its people.Lungu should know that “U live by the Sword u die by the Sword”. History repeats itself!

  10. I do not believe this language is coming from Pamela Chisanga. If it is then this woman is very unprofessional and it is wrong to entrust her with such responsibilities. Madam Chisanga please deny this posting because it has a tone of a political cadre. If you this disrespectful to leadership, how will those you lead behave. Sand indeed

  12. May be it is true that this lady was promised a position in PF government by the late president MCS and is now bitter because Lungu has ignored her. She may tarnish the name of Water Aid, a british NGO she now heads. She is now 100% UPND and spends the whole day turnishing the name of the government on her Facebook Page. Boma iyanganepo.
