HH challenges Lungu to live TV debate

13680268_1134537143295106_6684390928450447230_oUPND presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema has thrown down the gauntlet to incumbent president Edgar Lungu to engage in a live television debate, saying it would be a chance for them to focus on the issues that matter to voters, such as unemployment, high cost of living and and difficulty in accessing healthcare.

With the violence that has marred the campaigns so far, Hichilema believes a live debete will serve as an opportunity for the two leaders to lead by example and send a strong message to their supporters that competition in a democracy is about the exchange of ideas and civilised discussion, not violence, slander and intimidation.

“I am challenging President Lungu to a debate on live TV. I am challenging him to go head-to-head with me to debate our plans and policies for the country so the people can decide for themselves who they want to see in State House for the next five years,” Hichilema wrote on his Facebook page.

“This is an opportunity for us to lead by example and send a strong message to our people that we believe that competition in a democracy is about the exchange of ideas and civilised discussion, not violence, slander and intimidation,” he added.

He further wrote: “This is a chance for us to focus on the issues that are impacting the daily lives of our people, such as joblessness, rising food prices and the difficulty of accessing even basic health services. It is a chance for us to educate voters on the choice they face on 11th August 2016.”

  4. I have always advocated for a live head to head debate on TV between ECL and HH. This would be a good opportunity for each one of them to discuss pertinent issues affecting the people of Zambia. To give an insight to the Zambian people who has the capacity and the technical knowhow to get us out of the economic malaise the country is in today. For the two of them to tell us what plans they have to bring prosperity to the country, to bring sanity to the business environment, to rid the country of corruption that has now become endemic.
Now, the man Lungu will not respond to your Facebook posting, write to him and challenge him to a debate. Tell him that Zambians await the live TV debate.

  5. I urge Lungu to attend since he claims to have gained enough experience to government and if he fails to attend then we will know that he is again telling lies and we Zambians should not trust him anymore

  12. Such a debate can not take place otherwise even kids will see how empty and dull the person in plot one is. In addition his fellow dictators will not allow ECL to debate because this is not how they run their countries.

  13. Fellow citizens, it is a good idea that we use the remaining few weeks before the elections in Zambia to engage all the presidential candidates in live TV debates so that we have them focus on the issues that matter to voters and send a strong message to their the Zambian people that competition in a democracy is about the exchange of ideas and civilised discussion and not violence, slander and intimidation.

The purpose of debate is not to know who is good at talking but to see who has an appealing agenda for Zambia in the next 5 years. We want the candidates to realize that getting into plot one is not a simple matter like eating biscuits or sweets but something serious like passing an exam or serving the life of a patient. Someone said we do not want debates but we just want whosoever will win to give us what we want. This ideology is irrational because you can not give Zambians want they want if you do not how to give them what they want. Knowing what we want is not enough. That is why we want presidential candidates to come live on TV to debate about how they hope to deliver what we want.

Lets lobby for presidential debates fellow citizens because they play an important role for conflicting opinions on a single subject. Having a presidential debate is like an intellectual war between two or more conflicting minds, which is the best approach in our democracy.

  25. mj Banda needs brain surgery. Why should Mr Kachasu Jameson ECL send Chimbwili Hippo to debate on his behalf? Is it Mr Hippo who is the President of Zambia? All mediocrity in governance of this country will be over after 11/08/16. Serious and visionary leadership should take our country forward. What can one expect from ever dancing President at public Rallies instead of articulating issues affecting people.
