Gardener kills wife, takes own life

A 22-year-old man of Lusaka’s Chudley area has reportedly murdered his wife and buried her body in his backyard before taking his own life.

The man identified as Sweden Gwayi, a gardener, is suspected to have committed suicide today by taking a poisonous substance yet to be established.

According to police spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo, Gwayi was found lying in an unconscious state at about 07:00 hours today outside the fence at the residence where he was working and staying in the servant’s quarter.

Katongo says members of the public reported the matter to police who later picked him up and took him to Levy Mwanawasa Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

She said after searching Gwayi, officers found a booklet in which he had written apologies to his parents and that he murdered his wife identified as Elina Kumwenda whom he buried behind the servant’s quarter where he was staying.

Katongo explained to journalists that officers made a follow up and found a site suspected to be a grave, adding that they have secured the scene while waiting for a pathologist as postmortem will be conducted on site after exhuming the body.

Menwhile, Police in Lusaka’s Kabangwe’s Zani Muone West today around 07:00 hours picked up a body of an unidentified male person aged between 25 and 30 years murdered by a mob.

The victim was found with some burns on his face. It is suspected that the mob wanted to burn the body as fire was found on the side of the body.

Stones and planks were also found at the scene. The body is in UTH mortuary awaiting identification and postmortem.

Police say Investigations in the matter have been instituted.
