Hakainde Hichilema says the country is not operating optimally and something drastic needs to happen to save the nation from total collapse.

In his Christmas message to Zambians, the UPND leader also reaffirmed his and his party’s commitment to the dialogue process so that peace, decency and progress prevail in the country in 2018.

Hichilema stated that 2017 had been a difficult and stressful year for most Zambians because of the high levels of corruption and impunity by those in charge of managing their meager resources.

“We in the UPND would like to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. We understand 2017 has been a difficult and stressful year for most of us. This is the year farmers faced serious challenges resulting in their not being able to adequately prepare for the 2017/18 farming season,” Hichilema said, adding: “Students without bursaries were viciously brutalised for demanding what is rightfully theirs. All this is because of the high levels of corruption and impunity by those in charge of managing our meager resources. This is also the year that the country witnessed a total breakdown in the rule of law and loss of fundamental freedoms leading to the brutal arrests of citizens for crimes they never committed.

“After all is said and done, let us use this occasion to reflect not on where we are coming from, but where we are going. We urge all our members and supporters to look towards 2018 with renewed purpose and hope.”

Hichilema encouraged Zambians to and spend time with family and loved ones and encouraged those with something to share to do so with others.

“We should never lose the spirit of helping especially at this time when we are celebrating the birth of our Lord and personal saviour Jesus Christ. Let us reach out to those who wronged us along the way and forgive them in true Christian style.”

He stated that his party looked forward to a busy 2018 and encouraged all UPND members and sympathisers to engage in party mobilisation and card renewal activities.

“In terms of the party, the UPND, we look forward to a busy 2018. We would like to encourage all UPND members and sympathisers to engage in party mobilisation and renewal activities. We all agree that the country is not operating optimally and something drastic needs to happen to save the nation from total collapse.”

Hichilema reaffirmed his commitment to the Commonwealth-initiated dialogue process.

We would like to take this opportunity to state that, as peace loving citizens, we remain committed to the dialogue process that was started by the Commonwealth. We are not putting any conditions ahead of these talks. Let the talks begin and we thrash out the issues that have been affecting this country and we all know these issues. If there was any doubt about our commitment to this process, this is an affirmation that we want peace, decency and progress to prevail in the country in 2018.”
