We were deeply shocked and saddened by the tragedy in which one Chinese employee was killed, another four were injured and some company properties and production facilities were looted and smashed by some locals in a violence broke out at Collum Coal Mine in Southern Province in the afternoon of August 4, 2012.

We express our deep regret over the unnecessary bloodshed and strongly condemn the criminal and brutal acts at workplace.

We request the relevant Zambian authorities to make serious investigations into the criminal case, handle the matter in accordance with relevant laws, bring criminals to book and do justice for the victimized, the injured and the affected company in a timely manner.

We call upon employees and employers to seek to address their grievances and differences through dialogues and consultations within established legal channels, rather than through violence and destruction which does not serve the interests of anybody. China and Zambia are all-weather friends. The Chinese and Zambian peoples shall respect each other, help each other and support each other in their efforts for social and economic development.

While advising the Chinese business people to abide by the laws and regulations of the land, we equally ask the relevant Zambian government authorities to take concrete measures to protect the safety and security and the legitimate rights of the Chinese business community in Zambia and to create an enabling environment for foreign investments.
