Nevers Mumba addressing supportersMMD leader  Nevers Mumba is in Lundazi District as special guest of  11 Chiefs and hundreds of Village Headmen who extended a special invitation for him to travel to the district in order to sit down to hold a series of meetings with them.

Speaking at one of the meetings, held on Sunday April 24, 2016,  Chief Mphamba of the Tumbuka-speaking people of Lundazi has said he would never forget Dr. Mumba because it was him who had directed the power utility company,  ZESCO to connect electricity to the district when he served the country as Republican Vice-president under  the late President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa.

And In  his address to the Chiefs and headmen, Dr. Mumba said there has never been any government in Zambia that has surpassed the MMD in the provision of a robust and sustainable result-oriented agricultural policy which also had  the most successful and practical farmer-input support programme since Independence. He said the MMD was still looking forward to do more if the people of Zambia gave it the mandate to govern the nation in this year’s general elections.

“We worked very closely with all chiefdoms and headmen in the country to bring a meaningful improvement in the welfare of our people particularly in the rural areas and managed to bring down the national poverty levels which we found at around 80% in 1991 to  around  60% when we left power in 2011.  This was largely due to a successful  unmatched and stable agricultural programme, which transformed the livelihoods of the rural population through-out the entire country by raising rural incomes, particularly among the womenfolk.” said Dr. Mumba.

Dr. Mumba, who has been accompanied to Lundazi district by a high level MMD delegation  including Acting National Secretary Winnie Zaloumis, National Treasurer Elizabeth Chitika and Provincial leadership from Eastern, Lusaka and the  Copperbelt Provinces,  said the MMD would do more to not only safeguard the welfare of the entire population of Zambia, but improve it drastically in the same way  that it quickly turned around a crumbling and broken economy in 1991 if elected back into power.

He said the MMD has the tried and tested blue-print and unquestionable track record  for sustainable rural and all-round economic development which had translated into a continuous and consistent rise  in incomes and increase in the standards of living in the 20 years it was in power.

He said the former ruling party was the initiator of all the current developmental projects the country was witnessing because it had laid the sure and solid foundation of a strong economy and well thought out infrastructure  development plan which was the next stage  after it had managed to put the economy in proper shape.
